Along with the 2048×1536 Retina display, the iPad 3 will feature a quad-core Apple 6 system-on-a-chip, and possibly 4G LTE networking.

A6 Processor

The current Apple iPad 2 has a 900MHz dual-core ARM Cortext-A9 processor, Apple A5 chipset and PowerVr SGX543MP2 GPU. According to Linley Group senior analyst Kevin Krewell, “We expect the A6 will be a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 design, which would be competitive with this year’s best mobile processors.

Retina Display

Apple lovers expected the Retina Display feature on Apple iPad 2; however, Apple has been working majorly for an improved version of it to include it in the iPad 3. The iPhone 4  supports the Retina Display with a screen resolution of 960 x 640. Apple explains Retina Display as: “Developing pixels a mere 78 micrometers wide, Apple engineers were able to pack four times the number of pixels into the same 3.5-inch (diagonal) screen found on earlier iPhone models. The resulting pixel density of iPhone 4 – 326 pixels per inch – makes text and graphics look smooth and continuous at any size.”

In order to compete against  industry giants such as Amazon, Netflix and Hulu Plus, analysts say the venture needs to provide a larger depth of content at an affordable price. ”We’re in negotiations right now (and) finalizing,” Bob Mudge, Verizon’s head of FiOS, told Reuters. “I feel very confident we’ll have a wide set of digital distribution content.”

According to sources, Verizon will own 65% of the venture and is set to invest $26 million which puts Redbox (Coinstar) at 35% and investing $14 million.

“The question is, how much are they investing to get a large library of programming? Netflix is spending up to $1 billion a year on content,” said Ernst, a Hudson Square Research analyst. “For me, it’s doubtful that these two companies will invest to that level.”

This will be an interesting joint venture and one to keep an eye on.

The android market place has come along way in the past few years, however, recently the number of malware filled apps has risen. While many app developers and users love the openness of android, there are always those that abuse it. Malware embeded in apps can steal personal data, sensitive banking information, and rack up unauhorized charges. Google developers have unmasked a new cloud based software, “Bouncer” to help combat malicious apps in the Android Market.

Bouncer has actually been in testing for the last 6 months and in December, Google discovered 22 malicious apps, many which have over 10,000  downloads.  Many of these Apps disguised their title as a popular game or app. Bouncer works by sifting through the code once it is uploaded to the Market and then scans periodically. It simulates the app and looks for any strange or abusive behavior.

“We really designed this in a way to maintain the flow the users and developers are familiar with,” Lockheimer said. “Android has been a comfortable place for users to download and purchase apps from.”

Since the launch of Bouncer,  Google has reported an almost 40% decrease in potentially infected apps submitted to the Market Place. Google blogged more of the details which you can find here.
